Voodoo Top 5 – Artist James Michalopoulos

Top 5 #7 – Artist James Michalopoulos

James Michalopoulos is a New Orleans artist internationally known for his distinctive architectural renderings.  His representations seems to have a life of their own.  There is a palpable energy and mystery in his highly original and much copied works. With a studio just steps off of Frenchmen Street, it is no surprise that he has earned a reputation for the unique musicality of his paintings.  In the true spirit of the New Orleans creative process, he and his wife Reese collaborated on his Top Five picks…

1. Ani DiFranco with Ivan Neville and Herlin Riely – Ani DiFranco is one righteous babe hot hot hot and super cool mama.  We love her poetic and poignant take on life that she shares with all her heart through her song.  (And our daughters are buddies!)

2. Iris May Tango – We haven’t seen them around since they played our annual Voodoo Ballerina King Cake Soiree, Mardi Gras party back in 2002/2003 when it was still under 400 attendees and in our living room.  We are really excited to see them again and dance like mad to their relentless groove.

3. New Orleans Bingo! Show – They are always a thrill with Clint Maegen front man, genius musician.  The experience is engaging, haunting, goofy, carney, cabaret, intellectual, sexy, beautifully composed music with a theatrical intelligence.

4. Fleur de Tease – Trixie Minx and her vixens are a treat for the eyes and a delight in the groin.  Some playful bump and grind and bare behind?   mmmm, yes…

5. Noise Coalition – Again this massive troupe of noisicians has a theatrical element that is intriguing to us, but also the, anarchist “play what you will”, attitude is refreshing in the middle of the other acts’ polished composition.  Again, we know a lot of people in this group and love to support our friends and local tribes.
